Hello! We are Jen and Mark Sauerbrunn,
proud owners of LilyGate Farm!
Our new budding business is a family-run flower farm and floral design company. We moved from the Kansas City area recently and are enjoying our new home. We specialize in adding in unique touches to design work by appreciating what is at its best on the farm.
Located in the Ozarks, among many cattle and horse ranchers lies our piece of heaven. Our farm is just under 8 acres but we are only flower farming on two at this time. Our dream is to have the entire property bursting with seasonal blooms.
I remember flowers as a young girl with my grandfather. His name was Charles but I called him Dad. We shared a special connection appreciating the beauty of ordinary things/days. He was appreciative of everything and everyone. I hope I can only strive to be as honorable as he.
Dad lived on a small city lot with a white fence on the back edge of the property, enormous trees in the middle of the yard, and a small corner garden by the back porch. Dad loved red roses. Red roses drenched over the posts of the fence and even the antenna for the tv in the corner garden. There are many memorable moments with him but one of my favorite is going to pick out annuals for a small flower bed around one of the trees. I felt so special that I got to choose the varieties and color. They were usually impatiens because he steered me to the shady plant section. But I loved the nursery and admiring all the beautiful treasures inside. He instructed me how to dig small holes with my trowel and fill in with the dirt. Also, to give all new plants a good drink for them to settle in. From then on, I needed that connection with nature.
My love of flowers and gardening has increased over time with a passion for growing my own material. I love the process of starting flowers from seed or tubers and nurturing them over time. This year I decided to get serious about my passion and take a course on turning my passion into a business. I enrolled in Floret Workshop and completed the course this winter. I am truly grateful to the class for filling in a lot of blanks that were missing in my knowledge. This class and my family also gave me the confidence to put my dream of flower farming to a reality.
Through this business I would like to provide floral bouquets to local farmer’s markets and business’s. I would also enjoy meeting with brides to discuss if local flowers would be suited for their wedding. I am also open for people needing help with floral arrangements and DIY flower buckets.
Growing up in Brazil in a suburban area, I always dreamed of moving to the country. I always loved visiting my aunts and uncles in a small town a couple of hours away where they have beautiful ranches with livestock, fruit trees and all kinds of pets. I always knew and dreamed that one day I would own a piece of land where I can grow my own food and enjoy nature like that. LilyGate Farm has been that dream come true for me which is nothing less than a blessing.
From raising a couple of cows and a few chickens to buying and using a tractor, every day has been a learning opportunity. Growing flowers will be one of those new things but I couldn’t be more excited about it. I am loving every second of this new journey with Jen and can’t wait for everybody to see how talented and gifted she is with flowers!
I also would like to inspire everyone who might think that just because they grew up in a concrete jungle doesn't mean they can’t become a farmer.
It is never too late to learn new things and chase your dreams. I hope our story inspires others to do the same.
